Preventive Care
Routine checkups, cleaning, and preventive treatments help detect and address problems early. Doing so reduces the need for more invasive and complex procedures resulting from disease progression. Remember that nothing is better than what nature provides you with – your natural teeth!
What happens during a routine check up
The dentist will start by performing a dental examination and take digital x-rays where indicated. Scaling and polishing is done to remove plaque, tartar and stains. Frequency of visits and routine x-rays are determined based on an individual’s risk factors.
Role of Fluoride Therapy in decay prevention
One effective preventive tool that has been well researched is fluoride therapy. Fluoride is a mineral that strengthens tooth enamel, making it more resistant to acid attacks. Professional topical application at the dentist office involve a higher concentration which inhibits cariogenic bacteria and produces quick remineralisation.

Restorative Treatments
The purpose of restorative treatment is to replace any tooth structure that is lost due to decay, wear or trauma. The goal is to restore function, appearance and oral health. The choice of treatment and materials depend on the extent of tooth damage, patient health, esthetic goals and budget.
Small to moderate sized cavities are usually restored with tooth-coloured materials such as composite resins. They tend to be conservative and has good esthetics. How long it lasts depends on the patient’s oral hygiene and bite forces applied to the filling.
Extensive cavities or certain root canal treated teeth may require additional reinforcement with dental crowns. Materials include porcelain-fused-to-metal, all-ceramic/porcelain, zirconia, or metal alloys. Crowns may also be required to reinforce crack teeth.
Complete loss of tooth will require replacements either through dental implants, bridges or removable dentures. Dental implants involve surgically placing a bio-compatible implant fixture into the jawbone which is then used to support a crown, bridge, or denture. While more costly, it feels and functions more like a natural tooth. Dentures are more affordable and indicated in cases where implants are contraindicated due to medical reasons.
For long term success, regular dental maintenance is important to keep restorations in their optimal condition. Be sure to keep good oral hygiene and go for regular checks to improve the longevity of your restorations!
